QUICK UPDATE - PERTH (JANUARY 2014)

Can it possibly be 4 January 2014 already?  Indeed it is.  Xmas has come and gone and we have celebrated our quietest New Year's Eve on record with Chef Pierre's homemade pizzas and a glass or two of bubbly in our cosy annex followed by the Robbie Williams TV special concert.  Now that's serious swinging! To complete our transition to confirmed New Years 'old farts' we were both in bed and asleep before midnight!

The Kingsway park has now been our home for just over a fortnight.  Where have the days gone?  We have been out and about a bit, but with Xmas preparations and celebration, local orientation, visits to Perth friends just before and after Xmas Day and, of course, the Test cricket, the days have flown by.  I suddenly realised I have been absent from the keyboard for a while.

As I am sure I have mentioned previously, daily life on the road is not all sightseeing and happy hours....the demands of shopping, washing, cooking and maintenance continue to impose a measure of domestic reality on our otherwise gypsy lifestyle.  And there are times when one just needs a breather...a few weeks just taking stock and allowing a set of surroundings to acquire something akin to familiarity.

Odd as it may sound, constant changes of scenery can present logistical challenges about which we normally do not have to give too much thought.  Where are the nearest shops?....what will be available?...will they have fish oil in stock...if not where do we have to go to get it?...where will I find a decent barber? etc etc.  Much as it goes against our grain in that we both detest the rapacious manner in which they do business, including the inevitable damage which a duopoloy can inflict on many of their suppliers, the sight of a Woolies or Coles can be very welcome in that we then at least have a fair idea of what will be on offer on the shelves.  Having said that we always keep our eyes peeled for a decent sized independent, such as an IGA, in which to separate ourselves from our domestic dollars.

Whilst speaking of coin of the realm, dropping anchor for a while does gladden the heart of the the tour treasurer......the Cruiser is a thirsty beast.  Removing a constant daily fuel cost for a while has a very positive effect on the budget.

But amongst these various advantages there is a trap. We have noted before that an extended stay in the one spot can lead to thoughts of "we've still got plenty of time left to see this and that" only to find that our departure date is upon us before we have done all we planned to do.  We are keen not to make this mistake in Perth.

Liz has made a list and I am here to assure you that once Liz makes a list, life becomes ordered (I use this word advisedly here...adjective and verb!)  We are now folk on a series of missions, the first of which is to visit all the metropolitan beaches and to walk along significant sections of the excellent walking/cycling tracks which are a feature of the coast.  This task is well in hand. We have driven from Quinns Rocks in the north to Leighton Beach in the south, and already walked a couple of the northern sections, snapping away.

Once we have roamed around Scarborough, City Beach and Cottesloe, with a quick peek at spots like Marmion, Whitfords and Hillarys boat harbour, I'll be back in blogging action, but not for a few more days....we have to knock the Poms off at the Sydney Cricket Ground first.  Mind you, sitting here this morning (our telecast begins here at 0730 hours...it is odd to be watching Test cricket whilst munching on our Weeties) with our arch cricket enemy at 5/32, we may be sightseeing again before we had planned.

In the meantime, we send our best wishes to you all for a very prosperous and fruitful 2014 and beyond.
