As you may have gathered by the fact that the blog is dragging its feet to the extent it is, things have been somewhat hectic for us both over the past fortnight. I thought that a quick, real time update (its currently 0530 hours WST Tuesday am 8 Oct) would be in order to allay the undoubted fears of some that Liz had finally had enough of me and managed to dump me by a lonely roadside.
We are currently en route to Perth across the Nullarbor, where electronic contact with the rest of the world is occasional to say the least. Our plans to spend some time at Eucla, for example, where I could catch up, have been knocked into a cocked hat by the weather.
As I am sure many of you know, the Nullarbor can be an unforgivingly windy place and anything forward of 'on the beam' is the last thing we need.....our fuel bill skyrockets. To that end we have been taking advantage of the favourable easterly quadrant winds of the past few days to push as far west as we can whilst it has lasted. In fact we managed 550 kms a day or so ago...our longest run to date since we left (which rewarded us with a wonderful free campsite on the edge of the Great Australian Bight cliffs...but more of that later obviously).
A weather change is due, with a hooting south-westerly forecast for later today in our part of the world. We are currently overnighting in Caiguna (where we were amazed to find we had Internet access...hence this quick update) on the eastern end of the 140 straight stretch of the Eyre Highway (the longest in Australia). We are about to pack up and travel the 270 or so kms to Fraser Range today (no Internet access) and thence to Kalgoorlie tomorrow where we'll put our feet up for a few days.
I'll then hopefully be able to catch up. In the interim let me close with the humble comment that your anxiety for more tales of highway derringdo is more than matched by mine to bring them to you...what's that old saying about 'rods and backs'??
