PORT DENISON 3 - MORE PARK PANCAKES AND PIZZAS AT THE PRIORY (11 MAY 2014)

Sunday 11 May......Mothers Day was upon us. Fortunately I managed to allow for the interstate time difference and timed my morning call to my dear mother to perfection as she was about to leave to enjoy a family brunch at my sister's.

With that most welcome duty done, for us of course, Sunday morning at The Dongara Denison Beach Holiday Park meant pancakes. And, as on the previous Sunday, Pam and Johnno Lee were on station in the camp kitchen producing yet another pile of marvellous flapjacks. They really do have this operation down to a fine art.

We all had a fine feed before Rhonda and Liz escorted Bob the Dog back to our digs. (John and I had already left...we were men on a mission, getting our fishing gear ready for another assault on the local herring)

I mentioned in my last that we had previously decided we would revisit the Priory Lodge for more than a photo opportunity. The large pub chalk board at the turn-off from the main road had advertised a Sunday Mothers Day lunch, followed by live music and wood over pizza from 1700 hours. A local troubadour (whom my enquiries indicated was more than passable at his trade), no need to cook tea, and a dog friendly outdoor entertainment area (which meant the Vogts could join us with big Bob).....we were all in like Flynn!

And we were not disappointed, by either the musical or food offerings. We arrived reasonably early and set ourselves up at a good table. The nearby brazier provided both warmth and cheer as the sun set, and with bottle of bubbles at $22.00 (a snip in WA) your correspondent was certainly set!

Warwick Tant established himself and his musical paraphernalia at the end of the verandah and proceeded to regale us with a marvellous range of songs. This bloke is really good. He apparently grew up locally and formed a band with a couple of his farming mates. This has since disbanded (sorry!) but Warwick has continued to do solo gigs. He is in high local demand for very good reason. Moreover, he played from 1700 hours until 2030 hours with only one short break....value for money indeed.

By nightfall the pizza oven was well alight, the wood had burned down to  fine bed of glowing coals, and orders were being taken.

And as I mentioned at the beginning of this piece, the quality of the produce from the oven matched that of the entertainment. The pizzas were as good as any we have tasted, and, at the risk of harping on the subject, reasonably priced. (as I am sure you have gathered by now, a fairly priced meal in WA is a matter of great surprise)

Even the dogs got in on the act.  'Lolly', the pub dog (what a name for a boxer!), was in her element. How she came to be attached to the hotel is something of a mystery.....she just goes with the place apparently.

Lolly makes all comers feel welcome, and is well known and loved by all the locals. She is definitely not averse to the odd bit of smooching. She made herself right at home with this couple who both work at the park in which we were staying.

Not to be outdone in the "what's in all this for me?" stakes, Bobby managed to make sure he was always ready to receive the odd scrap or two. The fact that his pleading look was directed at the folk on the table next to us was of complete irrelevance to big Bob. There is no such thing as loyalty where tucker is involved.

What an evening we had. Great food, great music and great company. When Warwick struck up the first bars of 'Mustang Sally', it was all too much for Liz and me...fortunately it had reached that time of the night when neither of us cared that we were the only ones strutting our stuff.  Sparkling white can provide a great balm to potential embarrassment!

This was to be our last Sunday in Port Denison and it had been a day to remember.
